Is this a caterpillar?

I found this guy on my Lady of the Night. When I looked at him, he scurried on down the bush and by the time I got back with a camera I couldn't spot him again. A few days later I saw him again, and raced to get my camera. Strange looking fellow, he is eating my plant but not much of it. Does anyone recognize him? Thanks!! Christy

Fascinating, isn't it? This is one of the many, many caterpillars in the large Geometridae family. Many of the most interesting within that group disguise themselves very well as twigs. Called geometers, spanworms, loopers, and a wide variety of other names.

Some may be host specific, but most are general feeders.

Fascinating, yes :) The best part is taking pictures and learning...with my 4 year old daughter!!! She really loves to find new bugs and cats and discover what they are on my computer. I didn't have a computer to look this stuff up when I was kid!! Thanks for answering my question...and I didn't squoosh him, he's cute in an ugly kind of way!!! Christy
