this is a swallowtail right?

It has 5 legs, normal? Just came out.

Actually, I never counted a butterfly's legs, but my little book says they have 3 pairs, making it 6 legs. The antennae of newly emerged butterflies are usually stuck together for a short time, so I wouldn't be surprised if a pair of legs got stuck together.

I bet it will be fine. It doesn't know it should have 6 legs. LOL. Is it male or female? I suppose mating could be complicated. I'd certainly let it go and give it a chance.

I have no idea to tell them apart. I saved him from being slaughtered at the nursery. I waited a few hours before I released it. I made sure it came out ok I had it in the mesh laundry basket and I took that outside and put it on a cone flower
Ok now thats out of the way I can try to figure out why these monarch chrysalis are deformed = /

Thanks for the reassurance about the swallow tail.
