Thanks for the info Tucker. That is exactly what I have. Glad to have a name for it so I can do a bit of research.

Is that the moth that eats tomatoes? Considered a scourge in the veggie growing community, lol!

The caterpillar for the five spotted hawk moth is the tomato hornworm. Its sister species is the carolina sphinx moth and the caterpillar is the tobacco hornworm. The caterpillars feed on a variety of hosts in the Solanacea family. The original hosts include wild tobacco and sacred thorn apple. The biology of the tobacco hornworm is fascinating. Its relationship with wild tobacco is complex. It is one of the few plants that relies on its caterpillar pest to develop into the species that pollinates it. So, it has all kinds of strategies to cope. Including providing variable levels of nicotine in the nectar. To much nicotine is toxic and forces the moth to use additional flowers (thereby increasing pollination amonst the tobacco flowers) and a small amount may be addictive as in humans. So, we have these moths to thank for the smoking habits of billions of people.

Unfortunately, since we grow a lot of plants in this family (tomatoes, peppers, tobacco) it can be a serious pest. On the upside (though not from the caterpillars perspective), as a pest, it is studied a lot and we learn so much from it. Poor little things have been through a lot of gruesome experiments.
