Those indeed are Luna moths. The bigger one is the female and she is probably waiting until night time to fly to your Sweet gum tree to lay eggs. I have witnessed a pair of Robin moths mating for an entire day before the two separated. I think it's common for giant silk moths to mate for a long period of time too.
