Luna moth?

Posted by RooToo none (My Page) on

I found this pair on my black eyed susan around noon. They seemed a bit mis-matched. Once they separated (several hours later) the big one fell off the plant and hasn't moved. The flowers are under a sweet gum tree.

Is this normal?

RE: Luna moth?

Those indeed are Luna moths. The bigger one is the female and she is probably waiting until night time to fly to your Sweet gum tree to lay eggs. I have witnessed a pair of Robin moths mating for an entire day before the two separated. I think it's common for giant silk moths to mate for a long period of time too.
