More Monarchs /Update

I am just about finished raising the 2nd batch that Sandy gave me - waiting for the last few to eclose.

A few weeks ago, I spotted a female Monarch laying eggs. I found about 17 eggs, of which 9 hatched and are about to make their chrysalis.

Two days ago, I found a solitary egg on one of the leaves I had picked to feed the 9 caterpillars. It hatched today - and I finally had time to inspect all my milkweeds closely. I found 8 more hatchlings for a total of 9.

:-) I don't know what's going on - since it's so odd to have Monarchs here in Oklahoma through the summer - but I'm thankful for the opportunity to raise them. I'm hoping I'll find more eggs and/or more caterpillars. So far the milkweed supply seems to be holding up.

Congratulations, Laura. There will be more butterflies in this world because of you--and you will be one of the people who will get to enjoy them.

In Florida we have a resident population that does not migrate. If there is little or no freezing where I live I will have them 12 months a year.

Good for you, and keep those numbers coming:-) I'm down to one lonely cat at work; I hope it's not too late for another Monarch ELF.

Tom,
I'm encouraged to know that there are areas where Monarchs can exist year round. It makes it less likely there will be a complete collapse of the entire population. It makes me think we have a little more time to re-establish the migratory pathways.
