I winter sowed Liatris ligulistylis seeds this spring. They were some I ordered from a wildflower nursery. About a half a dozen came up in the container and they all looked the same but they look suspiciously like some kind of grass to me. I haven't planted them out yet. I was waiting to see what they are. Any chance those things that look like grass seed are really flower buds?

SO SORRY...Looks like grassy weeds to me! ;o( I have a native liatris that I am going to be planting seeds this fall. I have had several things I planted that didn't come up for 2 seasons...don't know if liatris can be dormant for several years or not??? Take care, Lila

Definitely not - looks like some type of sedge maybe?

It's sedge for sure, definitely not liatris. Sherry

I normally have great luck with liatris germinating. I think you must have had bad seed. If you want to try again, I have lots of liatris seed. Mine is the typical "Gayfeather" variety. Let me know/send me an e-mail if you want some seed. Martha

Well that's disappointing. I do think the seeds were either contaminated or completely mislabeled. Try try again. Your kind to offer Martha but I was specifically after l. ligulistylis because it's supposed to be a Monarch magnet and I think I already have the one you mentioned. Thanks anyway.
