Is it possible to tell the sex of the occupant by looking at its chrysalis?

I have never heard of such, but I am not an expert.

I have gotten pretty good at telling the sex after the chrysalis has become clear(thickness of wing veins), but I've never heard of this being done with a green chrysalis. I think they all look the same but i guess there could be a subtle difference...experts?

I did learn from the forums this summer you can tell the sex of a monarch with it's wings closed because the dot on the males wing is visible....never noticed that before. Tony

All depends on which species of lepidoptera you want to sex. I do it all the time for the saturnids I raise. You can do it for GSTs. I'm sure there are many others.

Click on the link I'm including and it tells you how to tell the difference between male and female in Monarch pupae.

How interesting! I can hardly wait for my newly hatched monarch cats to become chrysalids so I can see for myself.

Thanks for an interesting and informative link.

Shady Oak Butterfly Farm just (1/16/2012) posted pics on their Facebook page on how to tell the difference between BST male and female chrysalises. They also posted pics of male and female monarch chrysalises.

Below is a link to tdogmom's page on GST's.
