It looks like a female pipevine swallowtail to me, Linda. Here are two pictures of mating pipevine swallowtails, so that you can see their undersides -

In the past, I've seen some with more white than others - I think it's just a variation.

Thanks, Sherry! I was looking for pics of some kind of a swallowtail that would have that light-colored area and couldn't find one. Otherwise, it DID look like a female Pipevine Swallowtail to me! Maybe I should look for eggs on the pipevine...my vines have recovered pretty well from the last cats I had, so that would be fine!

Well, that sure is an unusual looking Swallowtail Linda. I see those big white patches on the inside hind wing that have you confused. They are confusing. I looked at BAMONA, and they list 20 SWT species in Texas. One of them, the VARIABLE Swallowtail does have those big white patches, but it seems to be documented only in the southernmost part of Texas. Sherry is most probably correct in her evaluation of the species here, but I was wondering if perhaps there is ever any inbreeding between Swallowtail species there. That sure is a LOT of white.

Yes, if I hadn't taken a picture that showed the color that was off, I probably wouldn't have noticed it. So strange!
