This one is definitely trying to pupate. They don't make a strong "j" like Monarchs do. It's a Gulf Fritillary.

Yep, he's already j'd, just give him a safe place to hang. That bright orange fades and they get that greyish cataract looking color when they are hanging to pupate.

Thank you Ladies, for the helpful ID. Now I know what the little cats will look like just prior to forming their J. I learn so much from this forum.

This was my first year growing Maypop vines and sure enough, they attracted an occasional Gulf Frit Butterfly this summer. It seemed eggs were being laid but I only found the one little cat. At least they visited and maybe next year, there will be more. They are such a beautiful butterfly, sparkling in the sunlight as they fly among the plants.
