I can't help with a confirmation on the ID, but those markings are so cool. I want a bedspread with an edge like that. Wouldn't that be neat?

Yes, it's a Carolina satyr, Angie. These are the most common butterflies on my property. They're EVERYWHERE at all seasons of the year - I think they're just less common in December and January. I see them mating all the time, but, would you believe, I've never seen a caterpillar?They're said to use grasses as a host plant, and those have been much more prevalent since Hurricane Katrina, occurring in openings in the woods that didn't exist before the hurricane.
They always fly low, so I only have to look around my feet to see them!

For whatever reason, the similar but bigger little wood satyrs only show up in spring.

Thanks ladies. Yes Martha, it would make a pretty beadspread! It's odd to me now that I have never seen any Satyr in my yard, but I am glad to have seen and documented one.

Cool. They look somewhat similar to our wood nymph butterfly. Keep the pics coming as I haven't seen a butterfly in a few days. Work is over rated!

Angie, I just love the design on that butterfly! Thanks for posting! You ought to make up a "life list" like for birds, only for butterflies. I bet you've seen a lot over the past several years! Of course, here I am suggesting that you do it and I've never made one up myself. I'll have to put that on my to-do list.
