I guess I didn't post this properly the first time...hope I have figured it out :)

Could someone id this for me, I know it is common in my yard but unsure of the name.

First year I have had sucess with my passionvine...bees sure love it!

This is only the second Mourning Cloak I have ever seen and the first one in my little city yard.

The second picture is a variegated fritillary, one I usually see, but haven't so far this year.

I so wish we got mourning cloaks here - they're gorgeous!

I'm jealous that you were able to get such a good photo of a Mourning Cloak. I've seen them in my yard a few times but I don't think I've ever seen one LAND. They're always in a hurry to get somewhere.
I've seen very few variegated frits this summer and they're usually one of the most common butterflies in my yard. Maybe next year will be better.

Great pictures! I didn't realize that Mourning cloaks nectared on flowers? I saw one land on a bush a few years back and got close to it, but wouldn't you know, didn't have the camera.

misssherry...Thanks for the id. VF seemed the most likely when looking at my Kaufman Field Guide, but they quickly all began looking similar. I saw my first MC a couple of years ago while subbing on someone elses mail route that was in a wooded country setting, and it was so beautiful! I knew the moment I saw this one what it was and grabbed my camera while yelling for my husband to come see. Just like you, I wish I could see them more often!

christie and terrene...thanks for the compliment. It sure seemed to like my hummingbird feeder as it hung out there for quite some time and revisited for days. I never saw it ever go to any of the many flowers I still have blooming.
