Nerry, I use a Panasonic Lumix G2 It's a micro 4 3rds camera. Not all of the shots were taken with it though.
Forgot to put this shot in.

Fun thread. I enjoy seeing a variety of butterflies, so I am adding some that may not be represented yet. Unfortunately, they are not loaded into an online site, so it will have to be solo per post.

I wondered if this queen was after salts/minerals from the dried plant, as the nectar fountain appeared to have dried up a while back.

Awesome pics sorry for asking but does anyone raise palamedes cats and If you do can u post a pic

  • MissSherry

I haven't raised any palamedes swallowtail caterpillars this year, the first time this has happened and very disturbing. The laurel wilt that's affected red bay (their host plant) has something to do with this, but the many other pests that beset red bay/Persea probably has a lot to do with it, at least here, where laurel wilt isn't supposed to occur. It reportedly DOES occur just a few counties to the southeast of here (Jackson County, MS) so that's very worrisome. Lately, I'm being visited frequently, however, by adults in my garden - they especially like the porterweed and turk's cap, their tastes differing a bit from most other swallowtails. There is a good bit of healthy new growth on my best, most gall resistant red bay, and I've seen palamedes swallowtails circling it quite a lot. I also have a seedling, undoubtedly from this good red bay, growing in a container with new growth on it, also. Palamedes swallowtails lay eggs until late fall - I've gotten new chrysalides as late as Christmas. Anyway, I'm hoping I'll get some cats to raise before the year is over.

Palamedes swallowtail eggs look just like spicebush swallowtail eggs, and the caterpillars are nearly the same. In the early instars, the white patch on the lower end of palamedes cats is solid white, not being mottled like spicebush swallowtails.
When they turn green, they look like spicebush cats without the big yellow eyes - they only have little triangular red spots there. And their undersides are darker, being nearly burgundy colored. Palamedes cats grow bigger than spicebush cats, and the butterflies are bigger, being almost as big as tiger and giant swallowtails.

Here's a spicebush cat on the left and a palamedes cat on the right -

This picture shows the burgundy undersides -

P.S. I loved the pictures of the lorquin's admiral (never seen one) and the green hairstreak!
