The galleries are an obsolete artifact of the "dial-up" modem days when Internet connections were slow. The gallery separated the slow-loading images from the fast-loading text, giving members the option of avoiding the photos.

A few people may continue to use the galleries, even though most people have faster connections these days. The photo icon now denotes forum text messages that contain images in case someone wants to skip those.
