Butterfly Bush-poisonous?

Hi all,

I just purchased a butterfly bush online (Clerodendrum ugandense), and after completing the purchase, I read that all parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested. I know that there are degrees to that--some plants can make you feel ill if you ingest them, while some can cause a much more serious reaction. I'm concerned because I have a one-year-old, and even though the plant wouldn't be placed in an area she frequently goes, you just never know. So I want to know whether anyone knows where I can find out any further information about how dangerous this plant might be? I appreciate any insights.

I do know they are aptly titled "Butterfly Bush", yet Clerodendrum Ugandense, is not the most ideal flower for butterflies.

I grow this alongside all my other tried-and-true nectar sources. They, might nectar on it if all my other stuff is dead or gone. ALL of the Species are attracted to Lantana, All types of Porterweed, Buddleia-Bush types, and many Pentas.

But about the health aspect, here's something I found...
The genus name comes from the Greek: dendron, tree; and kleros, chance, a reference to the varied medicinal properties purported for some members of the genus. C. trichotomum, from China, has been shown to lower high blood pressure, and is prescribed in Chinese herbal medicine for a variety of ailments.

If you got rid of all the plants that had toxic properties, your garden would practically be bare. This one has some toxic alkaloids, much like other members of the same family.

I'd use it in your landscaping. As your child matures, I'll bet she won't begin grazing on the plants as a rite of passage.
