| I was trying to figure out if my butterfly that eclosed was a male or female, I had planned to check their chrysalis "skins" after they eclosed to see if I had a male or female, but realized yesterday after the first one eclosed , that after they eclose, you cannot tell if they are male of female by looking at the chrysalis, or at least I couldn't and the way they attach themselves makes it difficult to look at the underside of the chrysalis to see if male of female. So last night I was googling trying to find out if there was some other identifying factor for males or females, and i found this!! So if this is correct, my first butterfly was a girl!!

| Well I'll be checking my new ones for those spots. I knew about checking for the line on the pupa, but that is hard to do the way they attach themselves, and not really worth disturbing them for in my opinion. I had not heard this one yet. I'd heard about the bar being more or less solid but you kind of have to have a male and female next to each other to really compare that. Anyway thanks! |

| Yes fighting8r, and I was so excited about being able to check the pupa "shell" after they butterflies emerged, since I wasn't even going to try and move them to check (I am afraid of disturbing the pupa in any way shape of form, lol) and after my first one eclosed, I checked and couldn't see a line or anything else, lol. So, I was glad to see that there is another way to identify the gender after they eclose, and pretty easy to see the markings too. |

I didn't know to check the big spot, just to look for thin bars on females and thick bars on males with big, close together spots. I'll check mine out in the future - thanks! Sherry |
