ID help please - butterfly or moth?

Posted by jodikay MN z4 (My Page) on

Here are the best pictures of this little creature that has been flitting about my yard this fall. Sorry they are not the best pictures. My excuses are it is windy, they would not stay put and my asters were covered with bees as well, so I needed to be careful. I definately need to get a butterfly/moth book as I had a lot of different creatures this year then I remember ever seeing. Maybe all the rain helped. We have been in drought conditions the past 4-5yrs.

Thanks for the help

Jodi

It's a butterfly. Two things confirm this: the wings are folded up above the head at rest (moths typically do not do this, with some exceptions); and the antennae end in clubs.

This individual appears most likely to be an Orange Sulfur or a Clouded Sulfur.

Jeff and Kelly, thanks for the info. I looked up Clouded Sulfer and thats what they are. They are all over but take off as soon as I even walked towards them!

Thanks,
Jodi
