Want to start my 1st garden here in SW Florida

Please forgive me, but I am a NOVICE at this. I want to ensure that I purchase the correct plants that will strive here in SW Florida around the Fort Myers area. I have some plants back in Illinois but not sure if they will take the different Region. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your time!!

Kind Regards
Betty

I imagine you'll experience a big difference between states! I can send you some candlestick cassia seeds if you like. Just let me know at nmann@texonlp.com.

A good place to start would be All Native Garden Center. They are very helpful and can tell you the best thing to put where, and they of course have butterfly host plants and nectar favorites.

You also may wish to visit:

Rutenberg park for the weekly Eco-Center garden tour each Wednesday morning, conducted by master gardeners with lots of advice!

The Terry Park/Lee County extension office butterfly and herb gardens. Tip: Visit on Tuesday mornings and look for Gayle Edwards and other master gardeners. They are there every Tuesday morning working in the garden and enjoy visitors and answering questions about the plants.

The Cocoloba Native Plant Society. Their monthly meetings just started up again for the season plus other events can be found on the site.

The Crooked Garden. Sometimes you may find someone working on the garden, but even if there is nobody there most things are well-labeled so you know what plants you are looking for and you'll have the names for when you go shopping!

Good luck with your garden!!
