Does anybody grow lindera benzoin (spicebush)??

Hey,

I was thinking about growing this for the butterflies next year, as it is the primary host plant for the spicebush swallowtail butterfly. Could somebody trade me (either this spring or next fall) some of the seeds or some cuttings (however you recommend propagating this).

I hope that one day I'm able to create a nice habitat for this magnificent species.

Thank You

Dogwooderitternet on Ebay has them. He is a good source for plants and has an excellent record.

I have a bunch but I've never seen seeds. They never get very big, maybe 2' high. I'm guessing the deer chomp on them. I've yet to find any cats on them. If the spicebushes were big enough, I'd use them to help feed my imperial moth cats.

KC,

I'm surprised that you have never found cats. The butterflies find my spicebush every year. This year they found all my little plants I'm raising for Farmer's mkt and stripped them. I, too, have never seen seeds on them. I have one that blooms in the spring. I don't know if they require cross pollination with another plant to produce berries. Now I'll watch for Imperial moth cats as well.

Sandy
