Sorry, yes, I meant a tuber. This auto correct is so annoying. Glad one was attached then, I will def pot :)

This piece of plant looks like it's struggling, about half of the leaves are turning brown. Do you have a pic of the whole plant?

PG, I hear ya! Used to be able to block specific domains, but as with almost all prior features of FF, the ability to do this has disappeared. The ads on GW are incredibly obtrusive. I'm sure this is why participation is so low/slow.

  • pirate_girl

Sorry, but I disagree Purp, I only see brown on one leaf (OK, a 2nd at the growing tip which looks like it got squashed) & was actually thinking this branch looked pretty good (esp. for Winter).

    bscorecardresearch.com -- yes, indeed.

Very irritating, I have to figure out (or get help) to bypass it as it seems AdBlock isn't doing it. What's FF? Guessing it means FireFox?

Gee, maybe I should re port this to GW.

  • Tiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL

TY, PG. I'm sure you've seen this plant more than I have, but I circled the areas that don't look like healthy leaves to me, bad edges. Those don't look like they're turning brown to you? I'm not sure since it's the backside of most of them, and red to start with.

Yes, firefox. Can't speak for other browsers, this is the one I've been using for a while though it's nowhere near as slick and functional as when it used to be Netscape, or even compared to itself as recently as last year. Also gone is the ability to easily delete *old* history, or to set an amount of time for visited links to expire. Very odd!

Look at the suggestions forum, your voice will be part of a chorus of the same complaint. To opt out of adblock, you need to visit it every time you open your browser, depending on cookie settings, and turn it off. Not much to be done in the browser settings anymore. If you complain to Mozilla, they'll tell you to find addons, which I've never done and don't plan to. Why should I need an addon for the browser to do things it's always done before? I suspect they're in cahoots to make it more difficult for the non-programmer to control their www experience in regard to advertising/tracking.

    Tiff,
I thought it was just me who was having the issue with FF not deleting history. I have it set to do so, but it doesn't seem to be acting properly. Good to know it's not just me (not good to know that FF apparently is having issues afterall).

No, Purp. I see no brown, even when you circle it (or add the arrow, that leaf looks fine to me). A bruised leaf or 2 on these is nothing. I don't see a problem here & I grow these plants, you don't do you?

I'm surprised you see that, but not that these are atypical leaf shapes which might throw others off on their ID. It happens mine has these same type leaves now.

    ChicaG,

If you've got several pieces of this, you could also pot some up in a small pot w/ C&S mix. Just stick them so that one pair of leaves is down in the mix (or take the pair of leaves off, to expose the node they grew from). Then maybe mist lightly after several days & maybe they'll root for ya! Nice plants w/ an odd bloom if you've never seen it. Also, you could ask the person who gave you the cuttings how they grow it.

Thx all for the suggestions and help.

PG - all I got was the one string clipping, which include a tiny tuber. I've attached the pic of it next to a 9V battery for sizing. The tuber has 3 different roots sticking out.

  • Tiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL

Yes, I have some of this plant. The leaves keep turning like those in the pic. I was chalking it up to this plant not liking my cold house, or being outside in too much cold before coming in, but really don't know. When the edges look like that, the leaves are soon lost, sounds like my plant is doing pretty bad. The other stuff it shares its' pot with look OK, but are not at all related. At least I know we were taking about the same edges, TY for the input.

  • pirate_girl

Sorry Purp, I've never seen cold damage on these. Don't know what it looks like. I don't think I have any current pix of my CW, will check around. Maybe yours DID get too cold before it came in. I don't see that in Chica's pic, sorry.

    Chica,

Nice pix, thanks for including battery for scale reference. You can pot that up as is, just leaving a bit of the tuber sticking up from the surface (don't push it deeply into the mix) & then give it some bright, indirect light, might take a bit, but that's how they root too. Do not water it after potting it, give it a couple of days at least before misting the mix around it lightly.

I also have that one and the one they call rosary beads around here, don't know if that is the proper name for it.Both of mine are doing well outside here in s. calif.I spent some time out there the other day pulling that clover looking weed that seems to find it's way into everything out of it.

I don't know how to access my pictures on my kindle,so i'll try to remember tomorrow to show you the pics.

I used to have a string of hearts. Along the long stems close to the leaves, it would put out little bulblets or whatever they are called. Anywere those were, you could cut it off and stick the whole bulb in the soil and soon, you had a pretty plant. Mine lived on my front porch in a plant window. I used regular potting soil and watered when ever I felt like it. It did well. Wish I had some now, but have moved onto other kinds of plants.......lol
It would grow down and start itself in some of my other potted plants, so I always had so many of them growing.

This is making me think my plant just needs more sun. I've always had it in total shade.

  • pirate_girl

Maybe more light Purp. Mine always sits at west window or the edge of west window. Did bloom once in that position, just one bloom but still.

  • Tiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL

Yeah, I'm seeing in people's pics they're right by windows. Don't know why/how I got it in my head it would like conditions as shady as the Philo it's supposed to be accenting. I'll break up that romance when I can, and find a brighter spot. Definitely, the bloom tells all. TY!

My Ceropegia woodii is my Precious. When I was a kid, my grandmother had a two-foot wide beast hanging in her sun room. You couldn't even see the planter! I visited my aunt in San Francisco a while back. She gave me two 3" cuttings from hers: a descendant of that original plant. This is what those two cuttings have turned into after 22 months. No flowers yet, but I hope maybe this summer, when it gets the chance to live outside for a few months.

For what it's worth, I root my cuttings in water, and haven't lost one yet. They're pretty hardy, and I bet with regular watering and sunshine, the cuttings will take off like a shot!

    Hey Danielle,

Yours looks great, both happy & healthy. I've never tried to root these in water, thx for that tip, I'll give it a try.

Hey Danielle, that plant looks great. I cant wait to see where mine will be in 22 months. I might try the water rooting method too. My mom roots all of her succulents in water and they do just fine. I've told her not to but she ignores me. Haha

My little offspring is sitting on the windowsill at the moment. It gets plenty of filtered sun and will get more hours of it soon.

  • Danielle Rose

Thank you! Their main requirement seems to be good light, so your little guy is well on his way. You'll probably see an explosion of growth once the spring arrives (if ever!).

At first, I let the two cuttings double in length, then chopped in half again. Then I would occasionally cut one of the four at varying lengths to root and put back in the pot. At this point I think there's about 8-10 main vines in there, and each wraps around the pot a few times. Since there's only a 4" pot inside that planter, I don't want to add any more. Each vine has grown a very large tuber at soil level (is anyone else creeped out by tubers?). This summer I will unwrap the mess and move to a larger pot. I feed it now and again, but it needs fresh media in a big way.

I have not had success rooting other succulents in water (except jades ... about 50/50), but it has been my experience that these cuttings grow roots much faster in water than in soil. I'm talking days, not weeks.

  • pirate_girl

Sorry Danielle to ask this, but why would anybody root a Jade in water (when they root so easily either in mix or even out of mix in the open air)?

  • Danielle Rose

Many moons ago, when one didn't know anything about succulents and had always successfully rooted other houseplant cuttings in water, it's just what one would assume should be done.

Agree with Danielle. Growing up we had lots of house plants and my mom rooted that way. She only recently got into succulents and cacti for her patio area.

  • pirate_girl

Sorry to hear you lost the cuttings.

What's going on w/ the tuber, is it still firm? Can you push it down into the mix 2/3 of the way (so just a 1/3 sticks out from the mix) & perhaps lightly water or mist JUST outside & around the tuber? If you can, perhaps that'll help it re-root.

  • Danielle Rose

I'm sorry to hear it. Where do you live? I need to move mine into a larger pot at some point in the next month, maybe I'll take some clippings and root them, since they seem to root so easily for me. If you're in the US, I can send them to you. It could be that a rooted cutting would work better on your end.

I finally got a flower last week, and there's two more on the way! The flowers are so weird. One friend said it reminded her of a flamingo. Another said it was obscene, hee!

  • KittieKAT

Lol that is the cutest and funniest looking bloom does look like a flamingo!
    And a lil obscene. ;-)

I'm still on a hunt to find one of these, a rooted one of i can..usually clippings don't like me much lol

  • pirate_girl

More than a little obscene, but nice & fun. For the seriously obscene Ceropegia, search pix of Ceropegia ampliata & then come back & comment!

Congrats on the bloom Danielle, seems a bit early. What part of the country are you in pls (your profile doesn't say)? I've only known these to bloom in summer, like July/Aug.

  • Danielle Rose

I searched and ... oh DEAR.

I live in NYC like you ... but in Queens. The other two flowers are growing off of the same little stem this one was on, so I don't think all of the cuttings are mature enough to flower quite yet. Still, there are more and more tubers developing on the vines themselves, leading me to believe they're getting to that point. Maybe this summer will see more blooms for me!

Danielle- That would be so amazing! Thank you. I am in so. calif. I keep checking lowes and home depot to see if they get any in. I remember seeing them a few years back but I haven't really seen them since. Here is what my little tuber looked like

It's not as plump now, its getting wrinkly...and depressed looking. Still has roots though.

Very cool on your bloom, didn't even know they did that. I most like the plant for the heart shaped leaves. :)

Besides the variegated one, looking at Danielle's beautiful plant above, I wonder whether there are different types of the green Ceropegia woodii too? Hers looks smoother and lighter, somehow, than others pictured above, or is it the light that makes the difference?

  • Danielle Rose

I'm not sure what factors are at play in the markings on the leaves, but this plant gets a fair amount of bright light. It sits in a western window, and gets sun in the early morning.

I found more! It seems they sprout a cluster of three, which bloom one at a time. The one on the left is the second of its cluster, and the one on the right is the first ... you can barely see the other two next to it. Funny little things!

  • shihtzu4su

Oh just found this post! I love my Rosary Vine/String of Hearts. :-) I got a tiny little start from someone about two years ago... and there's what it looks like now. I just kept snipping off long tendrils and re-rooting in the same pot. I would cut it off right below a leaf node (more growth hormones there) and stick it in rooting powder and then stick it in the soil. I only lost one or two starts in all the ones I did. :-) I have mine next to a Sunny south window... and it is happy as can be... although it has NEVER bloomed! I wonder if it's because I've been cutting the long strands for two years! I'm finally done filling out the pot for now.. so I'm hoping it blooms soon. :-)

What kind of feeding do they need?

So you just snip off a piece and stick it back ? Mine has only 3 "strings" and I want to make it bushier somehow. The vines are very long though.
