In general treat a potted plant as if it where in two lower zones than it's already known zone hardiness Example: A zone 8 plant in a pot should be treated (during cooler times) as if it where in zone 6.

Why types of cacti are kind of important for you to mention to others. As reference I've not had any problems during over wintering my Opuntia in a colder than yours will ever get garage yet any one of my schlumbs (jungle cacti) in the same garage would have frozen to death a couple weeks ago.

Again what kind of cacti are you asking about can help us help you. Some cacti and suxs can handle and may even need to have frost or frost like conditions for a short period of time .

The daily swings in temps being okay, for example it's 20F low at night but hit the 40's during the day is something that you don't need to be overly concerned about ,,,, just don't water

On a lighter note: If I don't know how to quickly and correctly spell a word with out the use of spell check I type a word in it's shorter form Example: Typing in short form ...temperature and it reads temps but
others read it as temperatures.
