Why did christmas cactus segment start rooting while laying flat?

I have a christmas cactus and it kinda gets abused and some of it has died. Anyway, i was looking at it today and a single segment that came off was just laying ontop of the soil and it started to grow roots even though the soil has been kind of dry, so i just now put the segment into its own small pot.

How long will it take to grow new segments?
and will new growth emerge from under the soil or from to top of the segment?

New growth will emerge from the top of the segment, roots from the bottom (as you already know). They do so readily with schlums just as a number of other succulents will root from leaves. Each segment can grow a new plant.
