Hi everyone. I don't often post here, and forgive me for asking.
I was wondering if anyone here puts their houseplant cactus outdoors for the summer, or just keep them inside all year in a sunny spot? I live in a cold state where I can't grow anything outside until spring arrives. |

I don't think there are many plants you can grow happily indoors year round.

I have grown several cacti outside in summer, but if it works or not depends on what species you grow.

Put them out in the Spring which is April 1 for me, let them get used to the sun gradually each day before it gets to hot and sunny for them, that way you will avoid sun bleching/burning. Norma

SS, Absolutely - everything goes outside once the chance of frost/freezing has passed, and a few plants even get removed from their pots and go into the ground for our long daylight days - the plants love it.

yes, I put things outside once the temps are in the forties, and you should adjust them slowly to the full sun. last summer, I had a bunch of small succulents that were a hassle to bring under shelter when it started raining too much- I planted the pots and all in a large terra cotta planter with some stone and 'waste' soil I had. They did great and I found out why at the end of the summer- most had extended their root system throughout the larger pot. finally, not everything needs direct sun, or direct sun all day. christmas cacti would do better in a somewhat shady area.

Hi sissysimone ! So good to see you! Yes, I love to move almost all of mine outside! They really do need some sun. But as some have stated, they need to get it gradually! And be careful of the last frost. Here in Tucson, every year, we think the coast is clear and then in March, we get one last frost. :) I enjoy them more outside too, being an outdoor person. :) Hope to see you again soon! Best wishes! JoJo

Some excellent points already covered: Don't forget to acclimate your plants to sun and wind. Cooler temps are a good time for this. The biggest danger is an extended rainy period early in the season. Your potting mix must drain exceedingly well. Try planting some small annuals into the pots to help with water uptake. And if possible, like already stated, submerge the pots at least a few inches into the ground or a larger planter and watch the growth explode as the roots have free run. In the fall, simply trim back the roots and start again next spring. Many succulents in habitat get plenty of rain during the growing season. It is the dry season that they are adapted to survive but typically many plants will thrive outdoors in the warmth and rain. x

| Thank you so much everyone here. This is such a beautiful place to come with a bunch of beautiful people. Norma, in particular, I have seen your kindness and knowledge here, I also know your age, hehe, and I have to tell you thank you for bringing your wisdom. I can only hope to come here a bit more often and help others some day. sometimes I feel to old to be of any help. You are a sweetie like my Jojo. Cactus has such a witty humor and I love it. | Most cactus and succulents are not indoor plants and need shelter in the winter but can tolerate temps. down to 20F for a short time, wrap them up in newspaper, and put in the garage. Cut out the watering, if you keep the sun off they won't bolt like a head of lettuce. Because I can't see what you are growing and don't know your growing conditions the information that I give you may be useless. Grow plants indoors that prefer low light, Sans. Gasteria, Haworthia which don't take up much room, African Violets, Orchids, Tropicals do well in the house. Norma |

sissysimone, I am at a total loss of words to respond to your last post. Your are too kind! :) It is an honor to be thought of the same as our wonderful Norma. I can only hope to be half as smart as her some day!!! I think all people of all ages can be of help to others, so please do share. And Cactus does have a way of making us smile. And too shares his wisdom! Maybe you could share some pictures or the names of your plants. It would help us to know what they are to help you care for them. This is a beautiful place to come, and we hope you do more often! :) I hope you have a great day and we see you here more often. :) Thank you again, for your sweet words.. (((HUG))) JoJo
