I think you may be confusing pumice with granite or some other weighty gravel - pumice is light, and therefore ideal for your vertical mix.

@teisa, its actually a found window frame from a salvage yard back with a 1 1/2 x1 1/2 wood frame. Chicken wire is sandwiched between this and the window frame and the backing is just plywood, now almost 4 years old and still very sturdy. Literally cost less than $15 to make. Just wished i didn't have the grub problem!
