Senecio Rowleyanus-is a tease

| I have had this plant for a few months already and I've kept it in the same spot in my west facing window on my plant shelf. It's grown a bit and doesn't seem to mind the location and treatment I've been giving it.
In the time that I've had this plant it has bloomed twice! Because of the location I've only noticed the fading bloom when I was moving it to give it a drink of water. And both times I've felt a deep sense of frustration and of being cheated.
Anyone else have a plant that you keep missing the blooms on? |

Are the blooms that short-lived or do you simply not get the chance to observe your Senecio often? Every morning when I drag myself out of bed I go around the house and minutely examine each of my 60-odd plants. It's a nice soothing way to start the day and watching buds, pups and new growth developing from day to day is the ultimate reward of gardening. Also, many plants are saved by catching pests and disease at their onset.

I don't know how long lived the flowers are but I don't check my plants daily any more during winter when most aren't doing anything.

MBT, my Senecio radicans is getting ready to bloom....I wonder how long they will last... Also, I have bloom stalks coming up pretty fast on both of my Gasteria liliputanas!

Mine has just stopped blooming out in the greenhouse about a week ago. It had "several" flowers on it that opened up each day. Not sure how long each one lasted, but the plant did continue flowering for around a month I'd say.

Webkat make sure to take some pictures. I'm so envious. Hi anya I wish I was lucky enough to have a greenhouse! I'd love to have enough light for more plants. Btw I looked at your webshots folder and that cacti you have blooming is very impressive!

Thank you mrbrownthumb, Glad you enjoyed it. I have consistantly had plants, here and there blooming all winter long. Sure helps with the winter blues. |

That's a really neat flower. I've seen it a couple of times on flickr and keep drooling at how neat and delicate the flower looks. Like I said when I get a chance to photograph mine it's always after the show-

MBT... I haven't grown this Senecio myself for a few years, but what I remember is the delightful scent of the flowers. You should take a cue from Amber and do the daily "once over" of your plants to see the little changes. It's worth the effort. I try take a cup of coffee each morning and peruse my plants. I've been a little lax in doing so the last few months due to health problems that my husband is experiencing and a new puppy in our midst (who goes from psycho to sweet in 2.5 seconds, I swear!) I look forward to our household settling down so I can get back to my beloved plant routine... Denise in Omaha P.S. Awsome photo, Anya!!!

Glad ya'll enjoyed the flower closeup. Nice "seed head" mrbrownthumb. Once the flowers are spent and dried out, I pluck them and put just toss them all right back into the pot. : )

Thanks for the comment Denise Anya they're self fertile? The other spent bloom I just tossed but maybe this one I'll sow if there's a chance of seeds inside.

Well, doubt they are, seeing how mine had a lot of flowers on it. All you have to do is open up the spent blossum and see if there are actually any seeds in it. Have you given it any water lately? May try and see if that helps it flower more, now that the days are getting longer.

I don't have one but would kind of like to try it. I have also heard the flowers are sweetly fragrant. I like Denise's idea of a morning cup of coffee and a leisurely stroll amongst the babies. MBT how can you stand to go days without looking at your plant? No telling what you're missing!

Anya the reason I found it flowering was because it was time for a little watering. :) I may water sooner next time. Fred After a while of growing plants the urge to check on them daily has seem to passed for me. And I only have a couple of plants are suppose to be winter growers so mine are pretty much left alone to do their thing until the warm weather and active growth begins. Which should be soon! I'm hoping for a little more sun than we've been having.
