Last night I was at a local supermarket and saw what I thought at first glance was a REAL Christmas, smooth segments and all, I bought it but upon reading the tags it is called a sunrise cactus(easter) It is also called a Hatiora Hybrid "Louise"So it is not a christmas cactus, it is very nice large plant anyway. I have other Easter cacti and I know they all have the scalloped segments but this one is smooth. Thought I would tell you all about my different Easter cactus and see if anyone else may have this different but nice holiday cactus.I really like this one, it is from a company called Bay City Flower co. Anyone ever heard of them? They have applied for a patent for this particular type. Just curious

Interesting! I've heard of Bay City Flower Co. they sell holiday cactus. I know of a lot of named EC but I've not heard of that one. Does it say what color it is? Maybe it's a new one! I'd love to see a picture of the plant if possible. They're out early this year! I hope we get some here soon. I have the species one blooming now but none of the hybrids yet. |

Hi ks-girl It is a sorta melon red. It is in full bloom and beautiful. I have a friend that is going to help me get pictures up and running this weekend. All my picture programs seem to be in a revolt but will post as soon as I can get this resolved. It was just strange to have the smooth segments. It is way over watered so I took off it's pretty red paper and left it alone except to look at it each day to see how many flowers were opening. What are the hybrids crossed with? I look this up but could find what i was looking for and how are these better or different from the regular EC? Ann in So Ut |

| Ann, lucky you! The color sounds lovely, I'm looking forward to seeing pictures. Last year I looked all over for an Easter Cactus, my area just doesn't get them. I finally found one after Easter at a nearby town(grocery store) by pure accident. I didn't have it long...it died after a few months. My guess is the store had been over watering it for weeks(foil was left on it), upon inspection I noticed rot on the bottom of the stems from soggy wet peat soil. I tried rooting cuttings, but none rooted :o( I hope I find one to replace it this year. Good luck with yours! |

Hi puglvr I tried last night to post but with problems on the site it vanished off my screen very odd. This plant is in a 6 or 6 1/2 in. pot( very full pot) It is full of blooms & hasn't lost a one I am sure it is made of many cuttings but that's ok they should some day work together and become one plant. I will try to get pictures up soon. Yes I am very happy to have found this but it is still odd that the segments are smooth like the CC. Ann in So Ut |

I was just doing a search on this particular Easter cactus. I thought the same thing when I saw it, that it was a true Xmas cactus. But, upon closer inspection realized it wasn't. Of course, I still wanted it and for $5 who could resist?LOL Ann, it's the same company too. How much did you pay? Did you notice the flowers open wide in the morning and close in the afternoon? I guess, hence the name"sunrise" cactus..... the red is the same color as my Thanksgiving cactus. I'll post a couple pix with my crappy laptop cam. I threw my Thanksgiving cactus in there too.

Here's a couple of photos of the Easter cactus open in the morning about 10:30. Seems like it is only wide open like this for a couple of hours...??? Weird.

| Beautiful! I was wondering if they were showing up in the stores yet. I'll have to start hunting soon. Where did you find yours? Big Box, grocery, other? I have to buy a new one every year because I can't get them to re-bloom. Anyone have any tips? cyberdancer |

| I saw two today at my Very Nice Nursery in 8" pots or so. They don't usually have a huge assortment of succulents, but these two pretties were out back, blooming away. Not sure what they cost, it was NOT $5, though. More like $15 - $20, so I passed on them. Same coral red you guys are mentioning. |

Threas, I am glad you found one they are beautiful aren't they? Mine had the melon red flowers that opened in the daytime just as EC's do. Mine was found at a large grocery store here in their flower section. I found mine in Feb and paid around $15 for it but it was in a 6 1/2" pot. Has since been re potted. It was so root bound that it had almost no soil. I may have to pot it again(same pot just need to try to get more soil off) I got some of the roots boken loose but didn't want to stress it out so I potted and have let it regroup and will do a little more trying to wash of soil in between root mass. But I do love it and it bloomed for a very long time. I hope everyone that has found one will enjoy theirs as much as I have mine. Ann in So Ut |

I found mine at a place called Produce Junction. They have such great deals! I just got a Cymbidium orchid in a 10-12" pot for $18. I did buy this for sis's Bday, not me!LOL This is my first Easter cactus, didn't know about the morning blooming. Learn something new everyday! I put all my Thanksgiving cactus outside for the summer and bring them in end of Oct. and put them in my windowsill where the temps. are cooler and the days are shorter to get them to bud. Same with my orchids. Here's some info I found on holiday cactus. As soon as the danger of frost is past it can be taken outdoors for the summer. Normally I hang it in a tree where it will get plenty of shade. If the pot is left on the ground, slugs can be a problem. While outdoors I keep them evenly moist and fertilize about once a month. Though the plant is hardy to 28 degrees Fahrenheit, I bring it indoors before autumn frosts. The Easter cactus has a resting period from October until February. During that time it prefers a cool place, around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. During this time the soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Regarding indoor care the plants generally should be kept moist. They do best if the temperatures are around 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and about five to ten degrees cooler at night. Beginning in February the plant begins to develop its flower buds. To help it do this properly keep it cool and relatively dry until you can see the buds. If possible lower the temperature to help induce flowering. If it is exposed to cool temperatures of 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit this will induce flowering. Assuming temperatures can be lowered in the evening, this will help it to bloom. Once the plant shows signs of buds you can move it to a warmer room with bright light. When the plant is flowering be careful to not overwater it. This can adversely affect flowering. Do not fertilize the plant when it is blooming because this will interfere with flowering. Normally Easter cactus will bloom from April through May. When it’s blooming it should be kept in a room where the temperature doesn’t go below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Regarding potting soil, the best choice is a quick-draining, peat based one. This will prevent overwatering. Though Easter cactus can survive for short periods in very low light indoors they do best with bright indirect light. Too much sun will burn the plant. It’s easy enough to grow your own Easter cactus from cuttings. Break off some of the segments and allow them to dry for 24 hours before planting them. |

I received some beautiful rooted cuttings of Easter Cactus from a trade last November, and its blooming for the first time for me. Thanks to the generous person that I traded with, hopefully she will see this post.
Like Theresa (above)...this one doesn't seem to stay fully open too long either...it closes and reopens the next day. Is this normal? This is my very first Easter Cactus. |

| Man-o-man you lucky person! Wow, I've only seen Easter Cactus in red, this is spectacular & since last Nov? Well, you are in FLA right Pug?? No really, you're doing something right, congratulations & well done! |

| Thanks PG...very nice of you to say! Yes, I've only had this plant for 5 months. I attribute the blooms to our very cold winter here and must have triggered the blooms. I've had it on roofed but open entryway. I left it out there the whole time unless temps were predicted to get 33° or below. The person couldn't remember what the color was going to be so we were both waiting. Thanks again! |

Awesome, Pug! I like the white blooms better than the red! I've noted exceptional blooming from my Holiday Cacti as well.... Josh |

| I was so excited to find a white Hatiora Hybrid "Waite" at the Produce Junction in early May. Spectacular!! Full of buds. They have just recently finished and will repot as plant is potbound. The photo sent looks just like mine and also from Bay City Flower Co. Was the name "Theresa" shown on the plant information? |
