Safe thing to use to tie trunks with?

Hi, I have a Jade that has two branches that form a "V", I would like to tie them together to bring the two separate trunks closer together(I'm afraid the distance) between them might cause it to break in half. Can you think of anything I can use to "tie" the two together to bring them "tighter and closer" w/out causing damage to the trunks. I can't use wire of course, but maybe something else? Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Hi Linda, You could actually use copper wire (16g or so) if you tied it not too tight, but the green plant tie tape also sounds usable.

Pipe cleaners too can be used for this. I use them often to attach Hoyas to trellises or help stake some Sans. until they've had a chance to root. Yes, they have wire in them, but if done carefully (not too tightly), it's just fine.

You could use 5mm aluminum bonsai wire, insert wire into aquarium tubing before wrapping to prevent scaring the trunks. I've used green gardeners tape with good results. A lot depends on how thick the branches are.

Thanks for all your wonderful advise...I can definitely try the ones you guys mentioned and see which one will work best for my Jade. Caudex, the trunks are not thick, about 2 inches all the way around, would that make it an inch in diameter? Halfway point? I'm so bad at Math,lol...That's why I was worried of it breaking in half from the weight of the leaves on top. Thanks again for all your great suggestions, you guys are so smart!!

Okay, I had some wire and some old aquarium tubing(thanks caudex) so I used that...one more question Please? I keep this Jade in full sun, do you think there will be a problem with damage to the trunk because of the plastic tubing? Just don't want to damage it so I want to double check before I put it back outside in the sun tomorrow(its going to rain today). Thanks again! Okay, here is what it looked like before
Now...

Sun shouldn't be a problem, you just have to watch as the trunks gain more girth. If the wire is left in one spot too long it will leave a mark. I usually move it up or down ever few months.

Hmmmmm I learned something new today! Now I have to remember to have wire and tubing on hand in case I need it! I have used panty hose cut into strips to tie up plants with. They haven't caused any damage on a rubber tree or jade. (at least so far)

Thanks Caudex, appreciate it. I will def. move the tubing every few weeks just to be on the safe side. Nodakgal, I didn't have any pantyhose on hand, its been so long since I've used them,lol...

Hi.. I use t-shirts...cut into strips and they don't leave marks or grow into the trunk... don't pull it together all the way at first... and then every couple of weeks pull it alittle more... a gentle move together.... I've don't it before... even with trees outside... linda |

What about the legs of panty hose, tighten it gradually. Norma

You should see the panty hoses all over my tomato plants every summer....Boy do they do a great job at supporting all those heavy branches.... My poor mother is always wondering where her's disappear to...shoosh....:-). I am not going to buy them. The last time I bought those for my x, I got laughed at in CVS.

Mike, A suggestion, pls. don't use your Mom's new ones; that's costing her money. Tell her what you're doing & ask her for her rejects (those hose which have runs such that she can't use them anymore). All kinds of uses for recycled hosiery. I sometime use them to stuff pillowcases I've made or in place of batting in quilt scraps. But pls. t ell her, that could be driving her a bit nuts.

Pug, This has been a great topic! I've learned a few new things. I think the last time I bought nylons was for new years eve! 13yrs ago~ ROFL!!! Mike, Moms too funny!! and i'm with her on this! ;) Mine would sacrafice new nylons any day for a fresh tomato though...LOL! I raided hubby's camping gear last year for my tomatos...Shhh.... don't tell him, I don't think he's figured it out yet. He had some real nice, very soft rope, and camoflauged! ROFL! Blended right in. I'm serious...:) JoJo |

Good morning, Pug! I'm glad you got such good answers, and were able to try the new set-up! In the past, I've used copper wire and garden twine, adjusted periodically. Your solution looks nice and clean! As for nylons... Yes, they are most helpful with the tomatoes ;)
