Cacti rotting in the rain...

We are getting so much rain without a dry period some of my in ground cacti are rotting. Cacti(and I think others are having the same thought) that never had any trouble before..I lost a good sized golden barrel cacti, some silver torch cacti and a group of mammilaria arent looking happy. These have all appeared in my front yard photos over the years...so,they are well rooted, slightly raised planters. It could also be of no help that temperatures have been in the 60's -NOT fully dormant and too wet is lethal. Other years low to mid 50s helped keep root rot at bay I suspect.
And it isnt ending soon.

I'll probably lose a few of mine as well. I haven't been ground-growing as long as you have, but this is kind of forcing me to rethink my ideas about what constitutes a sustainable succulent in coastal California. Maybe it would be better to replace all my desert species with winter growers.

Cacti rotting in the rain
Causes us no small pain
As sure as I know ya
It's the end of the Espostoa
Blue eyes lachrymose in the rain

Sorry to hear about your plants - how much has the rain gauge have you pegged so far?

If I had had more raised beds in the Great Deluge (and last El Nino) of 1998 I would have kept a lot of plants alive.

I suspect the water and not the cold is the fault for them rotting, I think we have emphized over the years that cacti must be completely dry during the winter months. Plant them in pots and raise them out of the soil, if planted in the open ground, wrap in newspaper and put them in the garage for the winter, they won't need light they are dormant. Giving low light will make them etiolate. Norma

I've kept mine undercover all winter until today , they all got some rain , Pachy's ,Mamm's and alike . Tommorrow I'll bring them back in undercover . I think it's supposed to rain all this week here in San Diego as well . I suppose this spring , the cactus /succulents out in Borrego State Park will be blooming like crazy ... I'm def. going to check it out .

Here too. My Beavertail prickly pear is rotting pad by pad. Rain, every day. Not hard, just drippy and foggy, some hard, everyday. No days of sunshine to dry things out. Very unusual for Texas. More like winter in Seattle. This is usually my favorite time for camping and hiking. Not this year. I can't get my hiking boots to dry out.
