Astrophytum but can't think of the species.

I would check out the brown area at the base immediately, and make sure it is not soft. If it is, you have rot.

Looks like it could be a hybrid with A. myriostigma as one of the parents. The reason I think hybrid is that there are a lot of ribs for a species of A. myr., but the flecking and the edges of the ribs look very myriostigma-ish.

The brown is typical of Astrophytums. In this genus, the rot tends to show black, but I agree that any discoloration on the base of a cactus should be checked out.

I seen that brown at the bottom and it's firm like the rest of the plant. All the ribs is what caught my attention. :). What is the deal with stores having fake flowers glued to them. The place I got it also had succulents in there spray painted different colors.

Big Box Stores believe this is a great marketing ploy to selling more plants. It isn't any different with blue colored orchids. People purchase them thinking they will bloom the same color and are surprised to see white flowers.

I looked through the internet doing a search on Astrophytum and found that Astrophytum myriostigma was pretty close and said the rib count could range up to eight. Thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction.
