Potting up gethyllis/retail sources of garden sand?

I'm preparing to pot up a gethyllis spiralis, and I'd like to know if I can use common (ocean) beach sand in my potting mix if I rinse the salt out of it? A friend of mine used sand from Home Depot that was intended for a child's sandbox and it damaged all the plants he used it on.

Would a potting mix of 1 part perlite/1part scoria/2 parts cactus mix be about right if I don't use sand?

Rick,

I don't know the plant, but I do know that one should never use beach sand (generally too fine and it's also a waste of water to try to wash the salt out). Get contractor's sand - your friend re HD is only partially correct.
