Giant Aloe re-pot

Hi there, everyone--

I have a giant aloe that has continued to get more and more top heavy even with repotting. Right now it is propped up with a multitude of supports and doesn't look the best. As you can see from the photo, it is still producing pups despite not loving its current east facing window.

I am planning on repotting this spring once it gets warm enough to bring it outside for its summer vacation. The current pot is about 16in in diameter and a foot tall. It is ceramic and thusly SUPER heavy and hard to move. I'm considering getting one of the new plastic "faux" ceramic pots for the repot, but am not sure...the soil is a mix of coarse gravel and cacti mix.

My main problem is the long stem that has developed over the years (I've had it for about 6 years) which is causing the plant to not sit properly in any pot. Is it possible to trim from the bottom? Or should I just get a large enough pot that I can submerge he whole thing? I will post a closer pic of the stem below.

Thanks in advance for your help!
