I know this plant becomes a tree in its native Socotra... but seeing it get enormous in person is hard to describe... perhaps a few photos might help. This plant is in a 48" box and really needs to be moved up.
Ha! I WISH that were my plant! Belongs to a well known grower in San Diego named Petra... she has a wonderful collection and is a well known grower as well as shower of plants... This was one of her show plants before it got simply too huge to move about. Never seen one even 1/4 this size before (in person... seen pics of actual trees in habitat).
I have one that I keep outdoors 24/7. I never cover it and it takes all the cold and rain we get. What it cant take is clay soils, indoor air- tried in ground, and tried it in the home for just days- it hated both.Outside in a pot? no problems at all. Its seen a 28f...nothing was damaged. Now,I will say mine has grown very, very, very, slowly. One day I will set up a small greenhouse..and its going to be one of my more heat needy plants to get a prime spot.
Seedmoney, I have the book, Pachyforms 2: Bonsai Succulents. Many of the pictured plants are from Petra Crist's collection. I got the book from Amazon. It's well worth it.
Stanofh, Living in Ohio, it would have to spend 7-8 months inside. Hopefully, I can also get a greenhouse and get some specimen plants.
I saw one on ebay about the size of that middle shoot on the plant pictured by lzrd. They were asking $2,000. Getting is another...Mine is about the size of that middle shoots lowest 10" of trunk. Squat. Seeing it in a huge box like that says..they need lots of root room to grow. I have a Cyphestomma that for years poked along in a pot..in ground growth has been much faster if still slow. Maybe I can pot up my Dorstenia just a little more when mid June and warmer nights stay.

I tried taking cuttings...every one of them shriveled like the evil witch in Wizard of Oz...fast (but in days, not seconds!). I've been afraid to even try again.
