How to repot this spiky aloe plant?

A while back, I posted this aloe plant up for identification and I remember people were split between two kinds. It was finally decided that I have to let it grow bigger before it can be known...

Well, I've had a love/hate relationship with this aloe. Most of the time I just find myself sick of it and tempted to throw it out but it keeps growing new leaves so I just find myself saying, "Okay, I guess I'll keep it around a bit more."

It seems to insist on wanting to stay alive and grow new leaves even though the older leaves are twisting up. I finally decided that I need to re-pot this ugly thing. I just don't know how to go about doing it.

You can see that the oldest leaves are gnarled up and it sort of has a trunk there? So... Do I remove the old leaves and repot it where the soil line currently is? Or... what? What do I do with this thing?

Is it big enough for another try at identification?
