I will warn you I have but one (Royal Flush) and have only had it for a year but the new split is absorbing the old leaves as we speak.

Mine is in my basic C&S mix of one part pine bark, one part perlite, one part turface and one part grit with less than 10% peat or compost (my compost is more of a leaf mold). Since these plants like a deep pot, mine are in 2 x 2 x 6 inch "band pots" like the one at the link (I get conifer grafts in these occasionally).

No need to sterilize garden loam/ soil - it's unlikely that anything harmful will survive. I've used garden soil for mesemb seeds without a problem. Algae is the biggest enemy, and algae spores are everywhere. Fresh air works wonders! Decent garden soil in a 1:4 ratio with perlite will suffice - just be careful that it doesn't get too soggy, depending on the clay content.

Make sure to use a deep pot - like 4-6+ inches. Pleiospilos have deeper roots than most mesembs. It's nearly impossible to find something that tall and also narrow. Those ugly red plastic beer/ party cups are a good size! Throw some chunks of rock into the pot to reduce soil volume a little.
