With this pencil I've always just cut them and stuck um in the ground, at least during the spring & summer seasons in zone 9 at least. Very hardy and what I've always heard is that they thrive on abuse so I make sure they get enough :)

Laying them on their side won't do for this - plant them a few inches into the dry ground and mist/sprinkle them only until you see growth. These are full-sun plants and grow well when it's warm, so if you can give them those conditions, they should take off.
