Sometimes I have precisely this issue. I trust others with more experience will add their comments. I would check the roots and determine their status. If all is well, continue as you are doing with very small amounts of water. The one thing you don't want to do, as you know, is to rot out the base... trust me, I've been there and done that!!!

My haworthias go dormant in the summer, and some are beginning to darken and shrivel a bit now. Is it possible this one is, too? Mine will stay this way until mid-October, and then boom, puff up and turn bright green.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I dug up the H. bayeri. It only took one very light tug, all it has done since I got it was lose its roots. As you can see below, though, there is a cream-colored protrusion that I am guessing is a new root. There is another nub that is not visible in this shot. From the looks of it, I am guessing it will lose those old roots as well.

This means I should continue watering lightly every week?

As you know, those are healthy roots - maybe putting in a rose pot (one of those ones that are 2x as tall as they are wide, something you'd also use to pot a tuberously-rooted Ariocarpus in), with maybe an inch of growing room all around) would be good. Yes, it's growing, so watering is suggested.

Catzilla is right. I've got a varmint calico which likes being secretively cached and uprooting a potted Agave stricta, among many other plants.
