Funny little Agave pup

My first interesting variegate, and by interesting, I mean different than its parent. I have two A. murpheyi, one is a prolific pupper; this is from the other. All the other pups from the two plants come up true from the start, but this fella is very different. How uncommon is this, and what is the outlook? Will it darken as it grows? If it stays yellow, can it survive like this? I'll probably pot it up before too long, we have a lot of rabbits around that could chew that little guy down to a nub in a few minutes time. Maybe I should throw some chicken wire around it for now...
