Sad Lithop

I purchased this lithop before I knew anything of mesembs and how they required different care than other succulents so I had watered it too often and it had burst in 2 spots. The burst spots seemed to callous over so I had high hopes for it.
I basically stopped watering it and changed its peaty soil to a gritty mix and left it alone for a couple months. It began shriveling just slightly which I assumed was normal in the dormant spring/summer stage but gave it a slight watering once just in case.
Early May, I went on vacation for 5 days and returned to find my once green lithop, palid and slightly shrunken/mushy.
Is it over for this guy? I checked its roots - I cant tell if theres anything wrong with it but I noticed a slightly dry/white patch at the base of the leaf.. any ideas what could be causing this issue and if it can be saved?
