1st bloom on this cactus (Oreocereus doelzianus) that I've had for years! I'm thrilled! It opened within a few hrs of noticing it. Glad I was out & about in the back yard to see it! Common name is Old Man (men? ha ha) of the Andes. Previous name was Morawetzia sericata (I believe). Given to me by PA Pete. Thanks, again, Pete!

Very beautiful... nice going! I wish I had as much hair on my head as your plant! Any chance I could get some plugs? I don't care if they are gray... just to have some hair!!!!

Congrats! My O. trolli bloomed several weeks ago, it went wild with about 30-40 flowers before it was done. Now if only my O. celsianus and O. doelzianus would bloom...

Nice! You gotta love a plant that makes red flowers. Mine is taller, but almost hairless and still single. Must be that Golden State sunshine.

I don't think I have ever even seen a picture of an Oreocereus in flower before. It is really something.

I agree with Dzitmoidonc: that So Cal climate seems like magic for most cacti--I don't think your plant would care for a Tahoe winter, though, even with its wooly coat :-)

Thanks, Josh, Dzit... & Kathi! Yes, they like the CA sun! :D

I have another from Pete that is tall & solitary. Can't figure the name-lost the tag-but will figure it out eventually. That one hasn't flowered yet. ;)

CURIOUS...does anyone else notice that the check box for following /un-following a post has disappeared??? It was there earlier today.

You're right, Notolover, I don't think my cactus would care for a Tahoe winter either! :P

I am pretty tickled with this bloom as well! =)

Hey RoRo, why don't you post a pic of the other cactus. There is a woman on here from San Diego who is an absolute whiz at IDing plants. She might be able to give a name. :p

Okay, started researching the other one (tall, solitary column) & narrowed it down to Espostoa lanata or Espostoa melanostele (not Oreocereus at all). I go out to check the spines on it & FIND a LABEL I made (it was hiding)...last time I was trying to figure it out! Ha ha! Had put E. lanata, but still not convinced. I think I recall PA Pete had melanostele on a tag...BUT, that was 6 years ago (2007). So, just letting you know (I just KNOW you were hanging on the edge of your chair) that I (sort of) figured it out. LOL

    HI Rosemarie
    I just love your Oreocereus!
but why do I get the felling your poking fun at old men with grey hair.since I resemble that remark. lol.
IM not one hundred percent sure but I have this one labeled old lady cactus Mammillaria Hahniana.lol

Congrats. I tried them..and that part of the yard became too shady and they rotted. Darn thing is ..they were doing great. I should have moved them.
I also have an Espostoa sp...bought with only that on the label. Its maybe my finest looking cactus. White haired, and girthy at 3' tall. They seem immune to everything...GREAT cacti!

RoRo, I told you she would find a name. Sometimes out from her mind, sometimes from the pot. 6 years, where does the time go.

Here are a couple of red flowers I took to piggyback on your post. I hate to see my name on a post, so I hope you don't mind.

I have the name of this one, but it is stuck somewhere in the cobwebs of my mind. There are 2 forms, one that is an extreme clumper, and one that I assume must bloom more but clumps less.

    {{gwi:563896}}

This is a Stapelia, sort of red.

    {{gwi:563898}}

This is what greeted me when I went out. Sort of a bad pic, but I need to go fix the washer and get off this machine.

Ooo, nice one, Richard! Yes, it seems to fit within the range for Mamm. hahniana.

What a bummer, Stan. But that 3 ft tall one sounds great!

Yes, Dzitmoidonc, "she" DID figure it out (sort of). Oh boy, does time fly! No, I don't mind the piggyback. The more the merrier! Rides are like that, you know. :) Nice plants! When you clear out the cobwebs, let me know. I would not have expected that flower out of that plant. Pretty! (Echinopsis???) Beautiful blooms on the Stapelia & Noto, too! :D Thanks for sharing!

The one with red flowers is Matucana madisoniorum. The babies roll down the sides whenever the plant is moved, 2X/yr. This is one of 2 or 3 Matucanas here. They tend to have red flowers, and they sort of look like Cleistocactus samaipatanus or C. winteri. All the Cleistos are beautiful. The one with the red/lime green color scheme flower is probably my favorite plant. As I have downsized, I've kept most of the Cleistos (about 12-15 species).

This is the other Matucana, M. tuberculata. got this one from Cactus Cowboy (WY) in 1997. This is the smaller of 2 bloom times. When they get out of the greenhouse and we get days of 90+, I get a few flowers. To get these to bloom well, I put them back into the greenhouse in early August and don't water them for a month. It gets 115+F in there, bakes everything. Then this one erupts with flowers.

Here's my favorite Cleisto. C. viridiflorus, seed from Mesa.

Ohhh, Matucana makes sense to me now! Seems you have figured out the perfect formula for them! :)

Oh yeah, I remember Cactus Cowboy! It's been a long while since he's been on here!

I think you'd get along famously with Cleistocrazy Bob!

Ooo, that green & red jobber is neat-o!

Dzitmoidonc - as you may know, I am also a huge fan of Cleistocactus (incl. the related genera Borzicactus, Loxanthocereus, etc., etc.)!

Would love to know which species you have!

Currently, I have 47 taxa/species, which includes some that in current classifications are lumped with other taxa...I keep them separate for clarity. A couple of more I have of seedlings (less than 6 mos old) that I hope I can keep alive (first time I ever tried growing from seed).

Your C. viridiflorus is definitely different from the ones I've seen of that species (supposedly a synonym of C. palhuayensis). Yours look more like C. smaragdiflorus to me. Very interesting!

Feel free to contact me off list!

    Cheers,
    Tristan
