What am I? ID Q

Hi guys, got this guy for $2 today and wanted to know what he is. I think its an aloe, but the leafs are growing front to back, not right and left. He also had many pups. I clipped one off and planted it else where. I gave all of them water today. There are still a few pups but I dont have other containers to put them in. Is it true they will suck the life out the mother? thats what I read online yesterday.

Also, my semps are doing great. Many are dried and shriveled up, I think theyre dead. Its because I kept them in for the winter. But this winter they will stay in my balcony, -16c is nothing for them, I hope.

It looks like an aloe vera of the Aloe chinensis variety, and NO, it won't suck the life out of mom. It is a prolific pupper and will form a clump. Don't fight it , let it clump. Maybe the mom will get bigger left alone, but the clump will look better than 1 individual mom slowly getting leggier. That is my opinion. Personally I prefer Aloe barbadensis, the other true Aloe vera. If you want a single larger plant , that would be the better choice. Do not water your pups immediately after cutting off. You will get rot. Best to let them callous for awhile and then to pot up.

Thank you, that was very helpful. Yes the other aloe looks better, but for $2, any aloe will do :) I wont touch it, bunch looks nicer. I only took out 1 pup, its currently inside in indirect sunlight. The rest are outside. Cant wait it to bunch, good to see something grows fast.
