My opuntia has White pus filled blister. It appeared quickly and I cut the cladode off, but I think I am going to depot all the cactus. There are three in the pot and seperate it out. Any ideas? Right now the cladode is cut off at the joint but itis bleeding weirdly. I do not like it. Nor do I like that raised texture and the brown staining on the pad. Any one out there with previous experience.

Boy, I have no clue, but it sure is scary! It seems to be affecting the entire pad and staining as you mentioned. It's so obvious that something is wrong, but what?

Maybe it just reached puberty....I popped it... OOPS please don't take offense. All of us have been through this stage of life. Thanks for the reasearch. I have tunneled looking for larvae and I am thinking it is an internal problem, a fungus or bacterial infection. It is sitting in OLD dirt, so maybe I should change it , isolate the one that shows signs of yuckitude and throw a prayer at it to the cactus angel and go on with life.

This too, looks like it could be related to oedema.

Yea, thast is me. I look for info everywhere when needed. Tapla. I don't think it is caused by moisture. It lives in a place with lots of sun and I don't water it but once every two weeks. But maybe.

RE: White puss filled Blister

did tons of more reaserch and it is saying that it is cochineal scale but i know it is not, it looks like a eternal problem

do you plant to toss the catus or do you want to save it

RE: White puss filled Blister

It is in a pot with 4 same type cactus. I will cut off some pads from the healthy plants and root them in case the other plants have been catching the desease too,and then yank the sick plant and repot the others in new dirt and the sick one in its own pot or just in the ground and douse all with fungicide. This cactus does get a beautiful tangerine caste in the winter and looks great with all my purple cactus. So even though it is a nameless common cactus, I have a soft spot for it. HHHMMM. "a soft spot" for a cactus. That is so wrong on so many levels. LOL. We are addicted souls at best.

sounds like a good idea. just keep and eye, the new pads may look healthy but may be harboing the watever it is

RE: White puss filled Blister

Have you found out what this is yet? I sure am curious.

Thanks to Al, oedema was the problem with my blisters (from a prior post of mine,) but your blisters don't look anywhere near like mine. The surface of mine did dry out and leave brown spots.

But I was thinking, I wouldn't rule oedema out. My plants had "water" blisters: too much water, fog rolled in, temps dropped. Water got stored in blisteres in the leaves because they got too much water. Your plant has more latex type fluid and it would make sense that the blisters would get filled with latex. If you look at the rest of the pad, you'll see little blisters that are probably storing latex too if you poke them a little. Maybe if you poke the brown spots, you won't get anything because the latex has dried out there as the plant dried out leaving brown skin. Hope this makes sense? Does it fit? Did the plant recently get too much moisture?

Mara,

And no one's nominated you for title of a post also most likely found at a free clinic. I'd say I was clapping with deep admiration but wouldn't want it taken the wrong way....

I hope you find a cure to the problem, which I think might be a moth laying eggs (think Mothra), or some critter chemically damaging the cladode. I mean, it doesn't look like gunfire, because I think there would be different tissue damage.

Penny, these plants are not getting nor have they gotten TOO MUCH water. They are high and dry in every way. No fog, very little rain and HOT HOT HOT. It has been in the 90's for months now. I am not counting anything out. I am going to accept living in ignorance of a true cause.

I don't have the time to send it out to the the ag guys for evaluation. I am just going to throw some remedies at it and pray it works. I am way to busy for this to take up too much more time. My J O B has taken over my life. I grow cactus because I can ignore them 95% of the time.

Cactusmcharris, LOL And you thought this was a stigmata on my middle finger encured by a empaled cactus needle? If Mothra laid an egg, I could not find the little cur. Glad I could make you laugh. I did not think about the confusion of the countless people who on googling about their infected wounds found themselves staring ata cactus pad on a garden site. LOL. How thoughtless of me.

Oh my gosh! I forget everyone doesn't live next door to me! My mistake! Yeah, I love being retired. Still, I'd love to know just what the problem with your cactus is.
