Roots above ground! What is going on here?

I have what I think are possibly pachyphytum and echcveria plants that I started outside earlier this year aprox 5 months ago. They share a small pot I moved them inside, to my eastern facing kitchen window. The Phoenix heat was cooking them. It's been a few weeks indoors and now they are growing a lot of roots from the stems (up to 1" above the ground).
I wanted to know if this is normal, first off. If not, is this do to excess moisture in the air (plant above kitchen sink) or is it crowded and needs to be transplanted?

The leaves appear normal and the plant is otherwise doing better than ever (other than the extra roots).
I have been chopping them down and replanting the tops, but if there is a better plan for care and maintenance please let me know. Thank you!

Looks like you have xGraptosedum there, possibly 'Ghosty'. Aerial roots usually mean it's looking for water. How often do you water them since you brought them inside?

It gets watered every 2 weeks. I try to wait until I see a slight change in the leaves before I water. The soil doesn't dry out very quickly. The pot was so small when I transplanted them that I only added a handful of soil to fill in the gaps. That's why I thought it might be crowded. What do you recommend?

I looked at the plant (on the right of 1st pic) and it looks like the stems below the surface are woody and unhealthy looking. I asume that the roots were a reponse to the rotting stem below.

Does this sound correct?

Is this a result of root rot or heat damage from when it was outside? Please let me know what you think.

Yes, that sounds plausible. If roots don't look good, maybe time to take cutting of that one & root again.

Your watering routine sounds fine.
