Epiphyllum Hail Damage

Hello :) Along with our weeks of cool weather and constant rain we had a good hail storm the other night. I wasn't able to get my epi inside so quite a few of the leaves have hail holes or cuts in them and dents and bruises throughout. Sigh. It seems to be fine just looks pretty bad right now. Should I spray anything on the plant to prevent a problem from happening or is it fine and better left alone? Thanks.

Hi -

I am not sure what to do for your plant, but I do feel for you! Hail happened several times to me last summer...I hope this summer will be different. Judging by the wacko weather so far, I don't have a lot of hope.

It is really a helpless feeling watching hail come down. I just have too many plants to do anything worthwhile, if I happen to even be there when it is shredding them.

I have not typically done anything for my plants after such a storm. Just cursed a lot, and looked at torn leaves for the rest of the season. Not sure if epi's would be any different.

Good luck.

Angel, sorry to hear you had hail damage. I've been thru that several times myself. Not much you can do. If I'm home, you would see me out there, moving my plants out of harm's way. Sometimes to my personal detriment! (Bonk, bonk, bonk on my head!) But my plants are worth it...

Just last night, we had storms moving in. I awoke about 2 a.m. to a serious lightening storm, and turned on the local weather. They were predicting a very serious wind/hail/rain storm moving in to the area, so here I was, out on my deck moving plants at 2 a.m. Of course, since I got my favorites moved out of harm's way, the storm wasn't as strong as predicted...

It's a predicament for those of us growing in "tornado alley." I have a covered porch that I grow many of my plants on, but my back deck isn't covered, so when a serious storm moving in, everything out there is at risk...

hi Tom - yes the weather has been crazy this summer, hopefully the sun will come out sometime with no more hail! it truly is a helpless feeling. The poor tomato plants are really pathetic this year...

hello Denise - I put the epi and the hoya questions separately and found you at both :) I've been known to bring things in too at odd times, usually tho it's in the fall with a sudden frost and then the panic hits! Hopefully the Epi will be ok, it just looks so terribly sad. It figures the one time I wasn't able to bring it in. I do use cinnamon on my orchids if anything odd appears on them (10 drops dish soap, 1/2 tsp cinnamon extract, 2 cups water) It usually seems to work quite well on some things. Think it'd be safe for the epi if needed?

Angel, sorry about your hail damage.your epie might end up with a few scares but I really don't think there any real harm, some of my epie are scared up, but they still give me great flowers, I would watch them and if you see any thing that's not right use your cinnamon mix, I just rub some dry cinnamon on mine when I see spots that don't look good and it works for me,if you leaves look bad you can always cut off the bad parts and make cuttings to start a new plant

Thanks gardenbear1, that's good to hear, I've got dry cinnamon and extract, I think I'll make some cuttings just in case, it's a good time of year for it :)
