Natalie,

At the top of this page is an FAQ - look at the Aloe one. As long as your stem is still solid, you can save it.

And welcome here.

Trim back any roots that look rotted/squishy ... put cinnamon powder/root hormone and let callous over for a week or so (maybe more in more humid environments like new Zealand ) then place on top of soil maybe digging in a bit and dont water, but mist abit for a few weeks until new growth is evident then it is ok to water normally again

It is winter , and I bet a damp AND cold one at that. I would be very sparing about any watering over the winter.

Ohh, i forgot the differant seasons over there oops! Maybe dont even water? I dont know about winter cuttings, as i have never had to grow something from a cutting in winter!

A. plicatilis is actually a winter grower. But it can't stand real frost.
But its roots also tend to rot with normal watering during summer.
Here in California it does best with only natural precipitation, which is about 250mm in winter (temps 10-15 centigrade or even down to minus 3 centigrade occasionally) and almost none during summer (temps 25-35 centigrade up to 42 centigrade occasionally).
Cut off the damaged roots and keep it dry till your early spring.

I have had aloe rosettes that I have cut off survive from November till March out of dirt. Actually, I forgot all about them, I waited till I saw roots coming out before I put them in dirt. I have seen pictures of people rooting large aloe rosettes by putting thir stems in a pot of large rocks. It gives a dark moist but dry area. One can mist the rosette but it won't rot. I use this method to root lots of things now. Misting the rocks when misting the rosettes gives some evaporation the makes for a good environment.
