Lithops Murder

So I think lithops and I aren't meant to be. I always see them at Home Depot and they look so happy, but then they die.
I had one that was in pot with two other plants, and I had it for a few weeks and every time I checked it, it was firm and looked happy. I didn't do much watering maybe just barely wetting the soil once in the two and a half weeks I had it.
Last night I looked at it, and it looked like it had been broken open and there was fluid oozing out of it. I wasn't able to get a picture because my battery was too low to have flash, but this is what I took this morning. What did I do? Should I give up forever with them?
This was it when I first got it. Which the soil it was in was soaked originally, and even when I left it out for a day or two it was still wet when I finally repotted it. {{gwi:578695}}
This was it today: {{gwi:578696}}
