Easter lily barrel cactus

I received a 7" bare root Easter lily barrel cactus and am unsure if I've planted it correctly. About a half of the bottom is a brown, woody texture (2" up), and the opposite side is fresh and green. I planted it upright about an inch deep in a 8" pot (7" tall) with about an inch of the brown exposed. Is this correct, or do I need to bury the brown, and, if so, the fresh green also?

A picture or two of your new cactus might be helpful.

This is a picture of the woody side of the cactus. The other side is green. Also, I'm not sure if I have the right name for this plant.

Easter lily Barrel Cactus? Get rid of the name, please! What you have is an Echinopsis. Easy to say, easier to write. There are many hybrids out there, the best known are probably the Schick hybrids. Do a search for Echinopsis subdenudata. If your plant is the species, it will make large, one day flowering, trumpet shaped flowers. Easter Lily Barrel cactus! Where do they get these names? The blooms look nothing like Easter Lilies, and they aren't barrel cacti. You send me the name of the person who came up with that name, and I'll stick an Echinocereus grusonii up his.....somewhere.

Ouch! Glad I didn't come up with that name on my own! Anyway, can you tell me if I planted it correctly? I obviously don't know much about cacti, other than there are a lot more varieties than I ever imagined possible. One other thing I know about this plant is that the flowers are very fragrant..

As you can see some cactus people are "passionate".

The depth you have the plant potted at is fine. I would suggest mixing in much more perlite (the white styrofoam looking stuff) and/or some grit or small gravel to improve the drainage. Your soil looks to be too heavy, meaning that it won't drain well, possibly leading to root rot. I would also consider putting it in a pot one size smaller than what it is currently in. Nancy

Thanks, Nancy, especially for the pot and soil advice. I used the Miracle Grow soil for cactus, but it didn't seem to be much different from their regular potting soil. How much perlite should I add?

Since the soil already has some vermiculite and a tiny but of sand init, maybe 1part soil to 1part perlite and 1 part coarse builders sand, pummice, scouria (lava sand(, decompased granite, turface, or chicken grit.. Usually people like 20% organic to 80% inorganic. The perlte dould be the bigger grade

For some cactus like Echinocactus I use 20 80. For astros even less organic. For Echinopsis and Cereus I use 60-70 percent organic.
