I am an orchid killer. My husband gives them to me for my birthday and I kill them over the winter . I hope he gets the message soon that this plant family and me are not simpatico. I need things that thrive on neglect.

Mara, I venture to say you aren't neglecting them enough. Like succulents, the #1 reason they die is overwatering. I will assume you receive a Phalaenopsis as your gift, since it is the most commonly available orchid. Give it an 8 to 10 degree day/night temperature difference and contain your watering and I bet you'll get it to re-flower!!!!!

I kill them with cold and neglect. They are in unheated since most of our house is unheated. AND I never remember to water.

Koooooool! Have you noticed a stronger fragrance in the evening? In an absence of light, I found some brassos can fill a room with a lovely fragrance.
