Kalanchoe prefers shade?

Hello,
This is my plant, Calvin. Since my parents won't let me get a pet, I stole Calvin from my grandmother's house on Easter and have been raising him as my own ever since. I'm a first-time plant parent, so please excuse my illiteracy in plant people talk.
I knew Calvin was a succulent because of his thick leaves. And I knew succulents needed a lot of sunlight, so I placed him on my roof in full sunlight. But he hated it. He expressed his disapproval by shriveling up the edges of his leaves. (As you can see in the photo, there is a big chunk missing from his bottom leaf. I had to amputate it.) So I moved him to the shady windowsill, putting him out in the sun for about an hour each day. It was a lot of work. I was worried about him when I went away for several weeks, because there would be no one to put him out, but when I came back he had tripled in size! Unlike other Kalanchoes, Calvin seems to prefer the shade. Is this behavior normal? What can I do to help Calvin thrive?
