Newer Roots on Adenium

| I recently purchased a Desert Rose and it needs to be re-potted. Would you lift the plant by 1/2 inch if some of the roots were just hitting the soil as shown in this photo?
Even if I don't lift it, will these roots find their way into the soil?
Thanks,
Gail |

| Gail, I'd definitely do some lifting. You can trim those minor roots off (or not). Some more experienced growers than I am cut the major roots, too. I'd say 1/2, or if you're feeling adventurous, a whole inch of height gained isn't too much, as long as your major roots are well-situated in your mix. Speaking of your mix, it looks awfully peaty - you'd want to not duplicate that. |

Thanks, Jeff. "Speaking of your mix, it looks awfully peaty - you'd want to not duplicate that." Nope, it's going into the gritty mix. ;-) Gail |

| Excellent - I'm glad we've averted another Apocynaceaic crisis. You do realize you'll have to post a pic of the finished product, right? |

Will do. I can't wait to see what root shapes I'm going to find! G |

| Okay, it looks like another DR that's been in the pot FOREVER.
Would you still raise it up only an inch? I'm surprised that those spindly roots were actually hitting the soil. This cavern has the potential for rot, if it's not already occuring. Any suggestions for treatment?
As always thanks for your input. Gail |

Gail, the caudex looks very good. Please show us one picture after the re-pot. Thank you. Marie |

| Gail, I'd force a rock (or rocks, depending on what you have and how flexible those roots are) into the root mass, effectively making the caudex sit on a rock/rocks, forcing it to grow over the rocks and out. I'd also trim most of the minor roots off. I think you're right - raise it up at least 5cm / 2" - just make sure that (1) not too much of the caudex is exposed and (2) what is newly exposed doesn't get full sun for a while - it needs to acclimate. It looks healthy and I'm sure you'll stage it most delightfully. |
But you're under no obligation to listen to me...

| Gail, You can also leave it as it is - many folks here like the 'non-interfering with the root ball' approach that I eschew for caudex/pachycaul-having (caudiciform) plants, but I like to make the roots work and grow over rocks, thus forcing them out and in more convoluted shapes than Nature sometimes takes. Many Adenium in their natural habitats are growing in rock / growing in a rock, and I try to emulate that sometimes. I believe the link shows Mr. Gary James and one of the finest Adenium I've ever seen. |

"But you're under no obligation to listen to me..." Yes, but I love playing/experimenting and learning from my plants, Jeff. I watered it well and I will see how pliable the roots are. Thank you, This is gonna be fun. Gail |

Gail, I/we would be very interested to see how your plant looks now...hope you see this and get back to us. Gill from the UK. |

Hi Gill, The plant is in a dormant state, sitting in a cool, dark basement and looking a bit shoddy with leaf loss and lack of moisture. I'll post a photo in a couple months once new growth has started up. Thanks for your interest! Gail |

Hi there! Thanks for responding Gail. Did yours go dormant naturally or do you stop watering etc to get them to sleep?Mine have simply refused to go dormant yet again despite our low temps and lack of light here in the UK's winter months. Maybe I should withold what little water/light/heat they get and force them into a winter rest, but I truly think I would have problems doing that. I feel much happier keeping them growing slowly till spring, which hopefully won't be too long away fingers crossed. Did you manage to get the roots over a rock? That sounds a really interesting project. Looking forward to those pics in due course. Gill from the UK. |

| You may want to check out this website about re-potting Adenium. Lots of good pictures that walk you through the process. http://www.adeniumsindia.com/home.php |

Yes, thanks Bikerdoc, I linked that site to the thread that CactusMcH posted a few days ago about the carved adeniums as its one I have bookmarked on my own laptop. :) Gill form the UK. |
