Is it a goner? Pleiospilos nelii.

I believe this is a Pleiospilos nelii. (I bought it at Home Depot or Lowe's.) It used to have a flower that has shriveled and it has opened up much more than it was. It looks quite unhealthy to me. Is there anything I can do about it or is it too late?

It probably is. It looks mushy at the base. Don't water it. You'll know in a week or so.

What causes this? I'm assuming over watering/poor drainage? I'm still figuring this out.

Mesembs are tricky. They don't grow like other succulents. You have to water according to where they are in their growth cycle. If you do some searches on this site, you'll find lots of info on how to grow these guys. Don't be disheartened, anyone who has grown these plants successfully has killed many along the way. Myself included.

These guys are fascinating but definitely not the easiest to not kill. Make sure you have proper soil and really try to hold back on watering. This one might be a goner...but you could wait a week or two and see what it does, keep it dry as possible and some bright light + good airflow
