Pencil Cactus help?

Hi guys, I have a small pencil cactus that I got a few months back. It is about 13-14 cm tall, and was about 10 cm when I brought it home. It has done a lot of growing, but it's grown in the wrong direction! It is growing outwards more than upwards, and gives it the appearance of a sort of tiny bush. All other pencil cacti I have seen look like a cluster of tiny trees. They have a few main "trunks" that then branch off at the top. Mine, however, branches off very low to the ground and grows more out than up. What do I do?
Here are some pictures.

This is what a pencil cactus SHOULD look like.
